The Ukrainian army captured an Indian Gujarati student fighting for Russia: The Ukrainian Army has said that an Indian citizen fighting on behalf of Russia surrendered before them. The soldier identified himself as Sahil Mohammad Hussain Majoti, a 22-year-old student from Morbi, Gujarat. The video of this case has been released by the Ukrainian Army on its official channel.

The Ministry of External Affairs has not yet confirmed this news. The Indian Embassy in Kyiv is investigating the matter and is awaiting official information from the Ukrainian side. At this time, the Embassy is not in a position to confirm that Hussain has indeed been apprehended in Ukraine.

Hussain's statement

Hussain said that he was caught in a case of drugs in Russia and threatened to be put in jail. He was given the option to join the Russian Army to avoid going to jail. He said that he accepted it and was sent on a fighter mission on 1 October after completing 16 days of military training.

But after differences with the commander, Hussain decided to surrender. He said, "I went to a Ukrainian ditch about 2–3 km away, put my rifle down, and said that I do not want to fight." Hussain also clarified that he does not want to go back to Russia.

After this video surfaced, a wide discussion on this matter started in India. According to reports, at least 12 Indian citizens have been killed fighting for Russia since the start of the Ukraine war, while 16 are still missing.

This matter is also sensitive for the Indian Foreign Ministry and Embassy because there is a situation of concern among the family and the general public regarding this. The Embassy in Kiev is investigating the veracity of this incident and is working towards ensuring Hussein's safety and his rights.
